Local fighters star at ITF World Tae Kwon Do championships in Barcelona

A talented group of martial artists from the Cathal Fegan School of Tae Kwon Do returned home with a haul of medals and a wealth of experience after a standout performance at the ITF World Tae Kwon Do championships in Barcelona.

Leading the charge was Rachael Carvill, who clinched gold in Hyperweight Sparring, overcoming tough competition from Spain, the USA, and Argentina in a thrilling final.

Rachael also contributed to Team Ireland’s silver medal in Team Breaking, along with bronze in Team Patterns, Sparring, and Special Technique.

Aoife Loye impressed with a third place finish in individual sparring, securing wins against Taiwan and the Netherlands before a narrow semi-final defeat to the UK. Aoife also played a pivotal role in Team Ireland’s silver medals in Power Breaking, Special Technique, and Team Sparring.

Amy Bantleman rebounded strongly after a close individual defeat to Argentina, playing a major role in Ireland’s silver in Team Breaking and helping secure bronze in Team Patterns, Sparring, and Special Technique.

Ethan O’Kane gave a gutsy performance against a top Argentine opponent who went on to the final, while Cara Mackin, in her first major adult competition, lost by just one point to Team USA in a tightly contested match – a remarkable debut showing.

James Walsh, just 14 years old, was one of the youngest competitors in his division. He went toe-to-toe with a strong Argentine opponent, showing resilience and promise for the future.

Joe McKeown engaged in a thrilling match with Greece, leading for most of the bout before a narrow loss in the final 15 seconds. His performance was praised for its determination and skill.

Coaches Mr. Fegan and Mr. McLearnon were commended for their tireless dedication and support throughout the event.

The team’s success adds more medals to their growing international record and continues to inspire the next generation of martial artists locally.
