Man (23) arrested on suspicion of hijacking and assault after forcibly removing woman from car in Newry

Police in Newry received a report, shortly after midday, on Thursday October 2, of an altercation in the driveway of a house in The Demense, involving a man and woman.

It was reported that the man had forcibly removed the woman from her car, a white Nissan Qashqai, then drove off from the scene.

While making their way to The Demense, responding officers encountered the stolen vehicle at Dorans Hill. The Qashqai failed to stop for police and instead made off at high speed in the direction of Chancellors Road.

Later that afternoon, at around 3pm, officers located the car at Damolly Retail Park and arrested a 23 year old man on suspicion of a number of offences including hijacking, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, driving when unfit through drink or drugs, no driving licence, using a motor vehicle without insurance and failing to stop for police. He is currently in police custody.

Investigating detectives would ask anyone who witnessed or who has recorded footage of the incident at The Demense, or of the stolen vehicle being driven in the Newry area on Thursday, to contact them at Ardmore station on 101, quoting reference number 602 02/10/25.
