A man accused of raping a 12-day-old baby has been refused bail.
The 25-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, was arrested on October 2 following a reported incident on Saturday, September 27
He is charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and sexual assault of a 12-day-old baby.
The accused, appearing before Newry Magistrates’ Court this morning, via videolink from Maghaberry, was making an application for bail.
He denies the charges against him but accepts he had sole custody of the child on the night the injuries occurred.
None of the details were read out in court.
District Judge Eamonn King denied bail on the recommendation of the prosecution who cited fears over the defendant’s safety and the proposed bail address.
The case was adjourned to December 5, with the accused remanded back into custody at Maghaberry prison.
