The arrests follow a search of a property in the city yesterday. All five people are currently in custody.
A man has been charged and four others arrested following the death of a man in Newry last night (Wednesday).
A 32-year-old has been charged with manslaughter following the incident on the Dublin Road area of the city.
There are no further details surrounding the sudden death of the victim, who was 51-years-old.
In total four men (56, 46, 34 and 32) and a woman (50) have been arrested on suspicion of drug-related offences, including possession of a Class A controlled drug, namely heroin, with intent to supply.
The 32-year-old man is due to appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday, January 18.
As is normal procedure all charges will be reviewed by PPS.
Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady has called for information following the man’s death.
Mickey Brady said: “I am shocked and saddened to learn of the untimely death of a young man in Newry last night.
“My thoughts and condolences are with the family in a profoundly difficult period, and I call on anyone with any information to come forward to the PSNI.”
