A man is feared dead after his van plummeted from a height into Newry Canal on Sunday afternoon.
Emergency services, including a specialist diving team, were at the scene near Victoria Lock late into the night.
It is understood a man was rushed to hospital but later died.
A number of protection bollards had been crushed.
SDLP councillor Gary Stokes said the van driver was a father-of-two in his 30s.
“It is so, so sad,” he said. “It is such a shock to the family.”
Party colleague Pete Byrne added: “My thoughts are very much with the family of this man who has two young children.”
