A man in his 20s has died following a serious four‑vehicle collision on the Armagh Road in Newry early this morning (Monday).
Detective Inspector Stewart, from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit, said police received a report of the crash at around 6.30am, at the junction with Church Road.
“Officers attended, alongside our colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service,” he said.
“The collision involved a white Scania lorry, white van, blue BMW and white Toyota Auris. Medical treatment was provided to those injured – however, the driver of the BMW, a man aged in his 20s, was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Both the passenger and driver of the van were taken onward to hospital for treatment to injuries believed to be serious, while the drivers of the Toyota Auris and the Scania lorry were uninjured.”
The Armagh Road remains closed this evening as collision investigators examine the scene, with diversions in place.
“We would appeal to anyone with information about the collision or who has dash‑cam footage of what happened, to contact police using our witness appeal form at https://reporting.psni.police.uk/appeals, quoting reference 159 19/10/26, or call us on 101,” Detective Inspector Stewart added.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a 999 call at 6.29am reporting a road traffic collision in the Armagh Road area.
NIAS dispatched four emergency ambulances, one Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) crew, two ambulance officers, an ambulance doctor and a chief paramedic. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) also attended by road.
Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, two patients were taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
