A man who slapped his ex-wife after turning up at her home intoxicated has been ordered to pay a fine of £250.
Addressing the 37-year-old, the district judge commented: “How would you expect the court to act if someone treated your daughter the way you treated her mother?”
Antolly Angelou, of Churchview Close in Kilkeel, appeared for sentencing on one count of common assault at Newry Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, via videolink from his solicitor’s office.
Prosecution outlined that on August 21, at 3.40am, police received a call in relation to a domestic incident at an address in Kilkeel.
The reporting person stated that their ex-husband, the defendant, had arrived at the property intoxicated and was refusing to leave.
Upon arrival officers spoke to the injured party. She stated that there had been an argument between herself and Angelou, with him then proceeding to slap her in the face.
Police observed a cut to the female’s lower lip and at 4am the defendant was arrested and made no reply to caution.
When interviewed, Angelou denied assaulting his ex-wife. After being shown pictures of her injury, he claimed this may have been caused by him pushing her.
Prosecution informed the court that they would be applying for a restraining order in this case.
Defence solicitor Cormac Murnion stated that there had been a “reconciliation”, commenting that his client continued to provide support, financially and otherwise, to the injured party and their children.
He added: “The restraining order poses as much difficulty to the injured party as it does to the defendant if proceeded with.”
District Judge Eammon King inquired whether Angelou had any daughters, which he confirmed.
He commented: “How would you expect the court to act if someone treated your daughter the way you treated her mother?”
The defendant was ordered to pay a fine of £250, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
