A young woman who died following a two-vehicle collision in Kilkeel has been named locally as 24-year-old Aoife Tinnelly.
Aoife was the daughter of Newry, Mourne and Down District councillor, Jarlath Tinnelly.
In an emotional post on social media, Cllr Tinnelly wrote: “My beautiful baby Aoife ♥️🪽 21/10/2001 – 20/04/2026.”
The fatal crash happened on the Newry Road in Kilkeel shortly before 6.30pm on Monday, April 20.
Police said the collision involved a white Audi A1 and a blue Mercedes Benz.
Officers and other emergency services attended the scene but, sadly, Aoife was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other people were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries.
The Newry Road was closed for a number of hours following the collision but has since fully reopened.
Detective Inspector Stewart, from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Collision Investigation Unit, said enquiries are ongoing.
“We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or to anyone who may have CCTV, dash-cam or other footage that could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 1288 20/04/26,” he said.
