Newry are mourning the loss of a longstanding business man who was a “wonderful boss”, friend to many and warm-hearted charity co-founder who did all he could to help benefit others.
Hugh Boyle Snr – owner of Newry’s famous Shelbourne Bakery on Hill Street – had employed many hundreds of people throughout his years in business.
Those who had the fortune of coming under his employ remember him with great fondness. Those who met him from the other side of the counter have also expressed their admiration for the man, generally regarding him as a gentleman.
Hugh had acquired the business from the Mooney family back in October 1994. From then on he and his son, Hugh Jnr developed the business with the help of their excellent staff, investing and refurbishing every area of the establishment, to include new kitchens and bakery house, right through to the Bakery Shop and restaurant.
The Shelbourne Bakery made the sad announcement of his passing on March 24 – aged 77 years – commenting: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Hugh Boyle Snr. Hugh passed away today peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
“Rest in peace Daddy. We will miss you. An employer and friend to many.”
Sharing their condolences, one person said to The Shelbourne Bakery: “I was deeply saddened to hear about your dad’s passing.
“I had the privilege of working with him, and he truly meant a great deal to a lot of people.
“He was not only a wonderful boss, but also a kind and supportive person who made a lasting impact on those around him.
“Please know that you are all in my thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. And I will always remember him fondly.”
Beyond the everyday running of the business, Hugh also co-founded, along with Joan McParland MBE, a fibromyalgia and ME charity, Hope 4 ME & Fibro Northern Ireland in 2011.
He held position of Vice Treasurer with the organisation ever since.
Sharing their sincere condolences upon the loss of their esteemed co-founder, the charity said: “Hugh was far more than a committee member. He was a constant, a steady, trusted presence whose wisdom, quiet strength, and unwavering support helped guide this charity for over 15 years.
“In every challenge, Hugh brought calm, clarity, and sound judgement and his influence is woven into everything we have built.
“Hugh’s legacy will live on in the work we continue, and in the lives he has touched along the way.
“We extend sincere, heartfelt condolences to the entire family circle. Rest in peace, Hugh. You will be deeply missed.”
