A pedestrian has sadly died following a serious single vehicle collision in the city centre earlier today (Wednesday), according to Newry and Armagh MP, Daire Hughes.
The Albert Basin and Bridge Street areas of Newry were closed to road users shortly before 4pm to allow emergency response vehicles to attend to the report.
Sharing his condolences, the MP said: “Devastated to hear a pedestrian has died after being hit by a vehicle in Newry.
“My thoughts and condolences are with their loved ones as they come to terms with this tragic incident and heart-breaking loss.”
A PSNI spokesperson said the area would remain closed for a number of hours.
They added: “The closure extends to Bridge Street from Dominic Street, Williams Street from Kilmorey Street and Buttercrane Quay. Traffic is building, please avoid the area and seek alternate routes for your journey.
“Update to follow in due course.”
