These pictures show the disgusting and heartbreaking scenes of desecration at a local cemetery after vandals smashed memorials and floral pots, broke crosses and threw floral arrangements and plaques all over the place.

The sickening sight at Monkshill Cemetery in Newry has caused huge distress to families, relatives and friends of those plots which have been attacked.

Newry City Sinn Féin Councillor Valerie Harte said it was difficult to put into words the sense of outrage at what had been done.

She said: “The desecration of a grave is very distressing for any family.

“Those involved in this attack must be unreservedly condemned.

“Many grieving families find great comfort in visiting cemeteries, they are places of peace and reflection.

“Those responsible for these attacks need to be ashamed of themselves.”

She has urged anyone who has any information on those responsible to come forward and pass that to the PSNI,

Added Councillor Harte: “To damage any grave is appalling and we expect that the police will conduct a thorough investigation in a bid to bring those responsible before the courts.

“I would appeal to anyone with any information that could assist with the investigation to contact police.”
