There have been reports of a man brandishing an axe on a busy Newry street this evening (Friday).
Police have confirmed they were called to a report of an alleged altercation and “currently in attendance in the Camlough Road area of Newry”.
It is understood police were called after a man was spotted brandishing an axe on Patrick Street before police gave pursuit passed a local bar onto the Camlough Road.
The police spokesperson added: “Police received a report of an alleged altercation in the Camlough Road/Patrick Street area of Newry on Friday evening, November 7.
“A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. He remains in custody at this time.”
