Forensic investigations are ongoing into the tragic death of a young woman in Newry this morning (Sunday).
Police are appealing for the public not to speculate on the 20-year-old’s death with further official details on the incident to be released on Monday.
A 23-year-old man has been arrested following the discovery of the woman’s body in the Drumalane area of the city.
Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to their inquiries.
Alliance representative for Newry and Armagh, Jackie Coade said she has spoken with the duty inspector at Ardmore Station who is appealing to the public to be careful about speculation around the events of today’s tragedy.
“This young lady has a family and friends who will be reading your comments,” said Ms Coade. “Think of them and ask yourself if your comment is necessary.
“Further details of this horrific event will be released tomorrow when the relevant professionals have investigated.
“The police would like to reiterate they are not looking for anyone else in relation to their inquiries.
“It is vital for you, the public, to contact PSNI if you know anything. No matter how small.
She added: “Police are still piecing together today’s events and will need to be at the premises for a good while yet as they gather evidence.
“Police will not be at the scene any longer than they need to be, they have thanked the local community for their understanding and patience.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere condolences to the family of the young lady who has tragically lost her life today.”
