Serving NI soldier facing single charge of rape

Granting legal aid, the district judge adjourned the case until August 12

Newry Courthouse

A serving soldier has been charged with rape.

The 28-year-old, who cannot be named at this stage, is alleged to have committed the offence on June 21 of this year.

The defendant, whose address was given as a barracks in Northern Ireland, faces a single charge of rape.

The case against the accused was listed as a first appearance charge sheet at Newry Magistrates’, sitting at Lisburn.

Although not in attendance, the defendant was represented by defence barrister Kelly Doherty.

A constable told the court he believed he could connect the soldier to the charge.

The particulars allege that he had sex with the complainant “who did not consent to the penetration and you did not reasonably believe that she so consented” on 21 June this year.

Granting legal aid, District Judge Amanda Brady adjourned the case to August 12.
