A Newry man with 32 previous convictions for theft has been fined £75 for stealing £6 worth of goods from a local store.
Court heard that the 42-year-old was currently suffering health difficulties due to his alcoholism which was the main feature in his offending.
Patrick Joseph McDonagh, of Ardcarn Park, pleaded guilty to theft at the city’s Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Court heard that on October 18 police were called to a Spar store in Newry, about a theft from the premises.
Officers were shown CCTV footage which showed the defendant place items into a bag before leaving the store.
McDonagh was subsequently arrested and made full admissions when interviewed.
Court heard the value of the items taken was around £6 and that none had been recovered.
Defence counsel stated: “The court is aware of Mr McDonagh’s difficulties; he has periods and bouts of sobriety, but this offence was committed whilst under the influence.”
He added: “In more recent times his health has suffered as a result of his alcoholism and he has had to undergo numerous surgeries.”
Court heard that the defendant had not offended since November 2015.
District Judge Eamonn King stated: “Paddy, you are before the court with 32 previous convictions for theft and this time the total value of the items was £6.”
McDonagh was ordered to pay compensation of £6 and a fine of £75, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within four weeks.
