The Swimming Pool at Newry Leisure Centre will be closed for the next months.
It comes as a a major programme of works was agreed at a meeting of the Council’s Active and Healthy Communities Committee on Tuesday.
Essential works to address issues relating to the hydraulic system of the pool’s moving floor and the replacement of pool tiles will now commence.
The pool will now remain closed to facilitate the programme of works which is estimated to be completed in approximately six months.
The Council appreciates the disappointment this will cause and apologises to all of its pool users.
All Council swimming lessons, school swimming lessons and autism swim sessions in Newry Leisure Centre have now been cancelled.
Centre management will contact all bookings/attendees directly regarding the cancellation of Council swimming lessons, school swim lessons and Autism swimming sessions.
A credit will be issued for any Council-led lessons which can be redeemed against future swimming lessons.
For children who are at the highest lesson level and do not need to re-enrol, or should a child not wish to return to lessons, a refund will be issued. Leisure staff have contacted parents/guardians regarding this matter.
Alternative autism swimming sessions are available in Down Leisure Centre and Kilkeel Leisure Centre and can be booked via the NMD Be Active App.
Centre management will be in touch with the designated points of contact for each club and commercial booking to provide updates and discuss alternative arrangements.
All pool bookings have also been cancelled.
The Health Suite remains open at present, however, it will close once contractors commence repair works onsite impacting on the Health Suite facilities.
Further updates will be provided via the NMD Be Active App in advance of the health suite closure.
