An 18-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after his scrambler bike collided with a car at the entrance to Monks Hill Cemetery in Newry on Thursday morning.

The incident happened shortly before the funeral cortege arrived for the burial of Newry man Paddy McGlennon, who had died suddenly last Sunday, September 14.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 11.30am, with the air ambulance landing within the cemetery grounds.

The teenager was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where his condition is not yet known.

According to The Irish News, eyewitnesses said the scrambler and a car collided at the gates of the cemetery just as large crowds were gathering for the burial.

The NI Ambulance Service confirmed it had dispatched one emergency ambulance and tasked the charity air ambulance to the scene.

A spokesperson said: “Following assessment and initial treatment at scene, one patient has been taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast by Air Ambulance.”

Mr McGlennon, a well-known motoring enthusiast, was described in his death notice as the devoted father of Patrick, FĂadh and Leigha-Rose, adoring son of Seamus and Patricia, treasured brother of Neal, Deborah and James and loving partner of Rebecca.
