Third public realm scheme expected to be designed and delivered in Newry

Funding bid to be made to Department for Communities

Newry Public Realm

A third major public realm scheme is on the cards for Newry.

It would cover Lower Hill Street, O’Hagan Street, Mill Street and John Mitchel Place.

The proposals are to be brought for discussion to a meeting of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s enterprise, regeneration and tourism committee today (Monday).

Councillors will be asked to approve the scheme and make moves towards procuring an integrated consultancy team to oversee the work.

They will also be asked to establish a ‘task and finish working group’ for the design and delivery – subject to funding from the Department of Communities – for this latest public realm scheme, which includes replacement granite footpaths.

Two earlier public realm schemes were carried out in Newry city centre in 2012 and 2015.

An economic appraisal and planning application for this latest work is expected to be submitted later this year.

An application for funding to the Department will be submitted also later this year.

The hope is that, if the money can be secured, a contractor will be appointed and the work will get underway in 2019.
