Three arrested after violent altercation between group of youths broke out in Newry shopping centre

A violent altercation involving a group of youths broke out at Buttercrane Shopping Centre in Newry and continued onto Francis Street on Saturday evening.

Police in Newry are investigating the incident, which happened around 5.40pm on October 18, which involved a number of young males and led to three arrests.

Inspector Ritchie said: “Officers attended and arrested three males, two aged 17 and one aged 16, on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

“Two of the males, aged 16 and 17, have since been released on bail to allow for further police enquiries to be conducted, while the other 17-year-old was released unconditionally.”

Police are now appealing for information and are particularly keen to trace a young man believed to have been attacked on Francis Street.

Inspector Ritchie added: “We are especially keen to speak with a male youth who we believe was assaulted and may have sustained injuries. He left the scene before officers arrived, and we have concerns for his wellbeing.”
