Traffic calming scheme in Cloughoge village

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced the completion of a traffic calming scheme in Park View, Cloughoge outside Newry.

Liz Kimmins said: “This traffic calming scheme will assist in reducing vehicle speeds throughout the village and improve road safety for all road users, particularly vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.”

Road humps and cushions were installed on Park View between the Forkhill Road junction and the 30mph gateway signs for the village.

Speaking about the benefits of traffic calming measures, the Minister continued: “My Department is committed to playing its part in achieving the targets set by The Northern Ireland Road Safety Strategy through the implementation of road safety engineering measures.

“It is in this context a high priority is given to the introduction of traffic calming schemes in residential areas. Schemes like this help ensure that vehicles are driven at speeds that are appropriate for built up areas.”

In recent years, residents and local representatives raised concerns about vehicle speeds and expressed a desire for traffic calming measures, in the form of road humps, to help tackle the problem.

The area was assessed and prioritised and the scheme was completed in February 2025.
