A five-year-old girl has tragically lost her life following a collision in Newry on Sunday night.
The police confirmed the tragedy on Monday afternoon.
Detective Inspector Stewart from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit said: “We received a report at approximately 9.25pm on Sunday, June 21 of a collision involving a black Ford Tourneo van and child in the Springfarm Heights area.
“The young girl was taken to hospital where she tragically later died from her injuries. Officers attended, and the driver of the van, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene.
“She remains in custody at this time as enquiries continue into the circumstances of the collision. The Carnagat Road also remains closed at its junctions with Springfarm Heights and Stony Hill.
“Police would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have captured dash-cam or other footage of what happened, which could assist with our enquiries.”

A spokesperson for the NI Ambulance Service said: “The NIAS received a 999 call at 21.19pm on Sunday, June 21, following reports of an RTC on the Springfarm Heights area of Newry.
“NIAS dispatched two emergency ambulances to the scene. No one was taken from the scene.”
Newry and Armagh DUP MLA Gareth Wilson has expressed his profound sadness at the young girl’s death.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of such a young child following this devastating incident,” said Mr Wilson.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the girl’s family circle, friends, and all those affected by this unimaginable loss.
“The loss of a young life is always particularly heartbreaking, and it will be felt right across the wider community. It is vital that anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have relevant footage comes forward to assist police as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding this event.”
