Volunteering awards to find ‘Shining Lights’ within local community

The Confederation of Community Groups has launched the Patricia Graham ‘Shining Light’ Community Volunteering Awards for 2017.

Speaking at the launch in Newry Credit Union, Mr Brendan Jackson, manager of Newry Credit Union, said: “Newry Credit Union is delighted to act as the main sponsor of the Confederation of Community Groups ‘Shining Light’ Community Volunteering Awards.

“As local people are aware the Credit Union began over 50 years ago from a spirit of voluntary self-help and it is reassuring to see that same ethos is still alive and well in our local area.”

This year CCG will be inviting nominations, under eight different Award Categories, from groups and organisations across the Newry & Mourne area.

The Award Categories are Age 16-24, Age 25-49, Age 50-64, Age 65+, Older Peoples Services, Youth Work, Community Group and Community Project. The nomination process is open until Friday, May 5.

Mr Jackson added: “Once again we anticipate a high level of interest and a diverse range of nominations reflecting the community landscape locally.”

The Confederation will be seeking sponsorship for each of the different Award Categories and, as in previous years, an independent adjudication panel will be appointed.  It will meet in early May to assess the nominations and select the award winners.

All nominees will be recognised on the awards night, which will take place on Friday, June 2 in the Canal Court Hotel, Newry.

Said Mr Jackson: “The Patricia Graham Shining Light Community Volunteering Awards are a highlight of our year and the CCG is indebted to everyone who supports these awards whether through sponsorship, help in kind, by engaging in the nomination process or by attending on the night.”
