The family of the late Philip Hayes are encouraging people across Armagh, Down and Tyrone areas to take part in this year’s Midnight Memory Walk in aid of Evora Hospice.
Proudly supported by McKeevers Chemists, the Midnight Memory Walk, now in its 18th year, takes place on Saturday September 26, 2026 and offers families, friends and neighbours a unique opportunity to come together to honour and remember loved ones in a meaningful way.
Newry man, Phillip passed away peacefully at home in September 2025, aged just 49, surrounded by his family and supported by the care of Evora Hospice.
Phillip spent a week in Evora Hospice before returning home, where he was able to fulfil his wish to die at home surrounded by those he loved. During that short time, the hospice became a place of comfort, reassurance and support for Phillip, his wife Joanne, and their sons, Jack and Ben.
Reflecting on their journey, Joanne said: “Everything was explained in a way we could understand, and no request was ever too much. There was such warmth and kindness in every interaction.
“Just knowing there was someone at the end of the phone made such a difference. Evora Hospice was there for Phillip, but they have also continued to be there for all of us. The support has meant so much to our family.”
When Phillip returned home Joanne was introduced to the Hospice’s out of hours nursing service. During the evenings, knowing there was someone available to listen, offer guidance, or support brought reassurance to the family at a deeply difficult time.
Since Phillips passing, Joanne and her sons have continued to be supported by Evora Hospice through its bereavement services. Joanne has taken part in the Bereavement Journey Programme, while her son Ben has found support through Family Night, giving the family opportunities to talk, remember Phillip and connect with others who can relate to their journey.
This year Joanne will take part in the 6km Midnight Memory Walk alongside families, friends and members of the local community who will walk in memory of their own loved ones. For Joanne, it is not only a chance to remember Phillip, but also to recognise the care that surrounded him and the support that continues to help her family.
