Work has started to create over 100 ‘park and share’ spaces on the outskirts of Newry.
Over the next eight weeks, a £220,000 investment will bring 106 new spaces to complement the existing 63 spaces at Sheepbridge.
According to the Department of Infrastructure, this additional provision will safely cater for those road users who are unable to utilise the existing over-subscribed facilities” and will also “allow for bus pick up and drop off”.
A spokesperson said: “The public is encouraged to use these new facilities to park their vehicles and travel onwards in a shared vehicle to their place of work or study.
“This reduces congestion, improves journey times and is better for the environment.”
It is not expected to be an isolated development either.
The spokesperson added: “The Department for Infrastructure will continue to identify further sites for park and ride and park and share on key commuting corridors.”
