A young Newry girl has suffered burns and bruising as a result of having fireworks “thrown at her”.
It is understood that the young woman was in the vicinity of Derrybeg football pitch on Sunday (September 28) when the incident occurred.
Meadow & Armagh Road Community Association, who frequently keep residents informed of anti-social behaviour in the area, said the girl had suffered burns as a result of the incident, adding: “The child is understandably very shaken by this.”
The group said via social media that fireworks had been “going off all day” across the area.
They advised parents to be aware of where their children are and of their actions as anti-social behaviour in the area increases.
It’s not the first time fireworks have been an issue in the area. Just three months ago, in June, the group complained of several major issues including fireworks being lit near the community centre, items being set ablaze in the middle of roads, verbal abuse, e-scooter usage and stones being thrown at passing cars.
Police in Newry are appealing for witnesses following an assault in the Jennings Park area.
Sergeant McCaughey said: “We received a report just after 4.45pm on Sunday, September 27 that a child had been hit by a firework in the vicinity of Jennings Park, Clanrye Avenue.
“Thankfully, on this occasion, the child did not sustain any serious injuries and no medical treatment was required. The consequences of this incident could have been much more serious – and I would like to take this opportunity to remind young people of the dangers of using fireworks.
“These are made up of explosive materials and if misused can cause serious harm, or life changing injuries. Remember, what might feel like harmless fun to some, may feel like anti-social behaviour to others.
