A young man has been accosted by a group of drunken louts in Newry this afternoon (Friday).
The victim, who was shook up, has contacted police and local Sinn Fein representative Liz Kimmins who has demanded immediate action.
The incident happened around lunchtime at Kiln Street steps in Newry city centre.
“I have been contacted by a young man who has been accosted by a group of men who are currently drinking on Kiln Street steps,” councillor Kimmins explained.
“I have been in touch with PSNI as has the individual involved and police are on their way.
“All the Newry councillors have met over the last week in council to look at ways to address this and similar issues throughout the city, including Bulls Hill, Loanda House and many others.
“We are currently working with PSNI, PCSP, youth outreach workers, and council officials to do what we can to deal with this properly and are working hard to improve the quality of life of the communities affected by this behaviour.”
The area is bedecked in home-made signs asking for residents to be respected in the area.
