Newtownhamilton Community Association scoops awards at Council recognition event

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, welcomed Community Groups from throughout the District Council area to Mc Canns Bar in Newcastle on Sunday 9th June 2019, as a ‘Thank You’ event to acknowledge and show appreciation for all the hard work Community volunteers do to help manage Community Centres throughout the district.

An awards ceremony took place and Newtownhamilton Community Association were privileged to accept three awards from Deputy Chairperson, Terry Andrews. Niall Murray received an award in recognition as a young volunteer helping within the local community of Newtownhamilton.

The Association’s Chairperson, Ita Gibney received an award in recognition of her 20 years service towards Newtownhamilton Community Centre. Newry, Mourne and Down went on to also acknowledge Newtownhamilton Community Centre’s invaluable service of over thirty years to the local community.

The event was well attended and it allowed Community Groups to network and meet other likeminded groups, share information and past experiences.

Vice Chairperson Terry Andrews was delighted to be in attendance and explained that the event was organised through the Active Healthy Communities Department via the Community Engagement Section who’s main role within the Council is to provide and operate high quality community facilities, to explore partnership opportunities in joint provision to ensure sustainability of Community Services, and to build community capacity to empower local people to effect change within their communities.

A number of Facilities and volunteers received awards from UTV presenter Pamela Ballantine for services within their communities.

The event was well supported and it allowed Community Groups to network and meet other likeminded groups, share information and past experiences.

On behalf of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Vice Chairperson Terry Andrews applauded the Community Groups and congratulated them on their awards and for their continued hard work.
