A south Armagh community is mourning following the sad and sudden passing of a ‘good friend’ to many.
Newtownhamilton Community Association led the tributes to John Hopkins – one of the town’s great character’s – following his untimely death on Wednesday.
“John was a most personable businessman who was always willing to support and contribute to any action which helped boost the community,” they said.
“He was generous to a fault – both with his time and financial assistance when requested.
“His bar – Mr Buzby’s, or as it was more commonly known ‘The Hotel’, was one of the best run establishments in Newtown and no Saturday night was complete without a visit to it!
“John made all welcome – as long as you behaved yourself. Himself and Bertie Mullen kept everyone in check. His absence will be felt for a long while to come.
“The Community Association extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Ann, his children, Clare, Ciara and Brendan, Gavin and Edele, his grandchildren, brothers, sisters and extended family.”
Newtownhamilton’s GAA club, St Michael’s, also offered its condolences: “St Michaels GFC deeply regret the passing of John Hopkins.
“A great supporter of St Michael’s down through the years, our thoughts and prayers are with the Hopkins family especially senior player Brendan at this time. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a hanam.”
Others paid their own tributes; with many referring to John as a “true gentleman” who “will be missed by many people”.
