A number of accidents on a south Armagh primary school route has left one local councillor pleading with Roads Service to intervene.
Sinn Fein councillor Barra Ó Muirí has demanded action on the Ballymoyer Road in Newtownhamilton after a number of accidents on Monday.
Councillor Ó Muirí has campaigned for the roads around St Malachy’s in Ballymoyer and St Oliver’s to be gritted ever since he’s been a councillor, but this latest series of incidents has set alarm bells ringing once more.
“I made contact with Transport NI and once again pleaded for the road to be upgraded to a primary road when it comes to salting,” councillor Ó Muirí explained.
“They continue to tell me that to be upgraded there needs to be 1,500 vehicles a day on the road.
“I asked whether a 53 seater bus counts as one vehicle or 53. They conceded it could be considered as 53.
“A return journey on a bus then is 106. How many buses are on the Ballymoyer Road each day?”
Councillor Ó Muirí ask for thepupils at Ballymoyer do a survey on traffic passing the school during a 30 minute period to see how many might pass in a day.
He added: “I’ve asked for a site meeting with Transport NI and the Principal of Ballymoyer PS as soon as possible and hope to finally get the road included on the Primary Roads list.”
