A highly-valued and well-thought-of community volunteer is now off the road after vandals smashed up his car in Newtownhamilton.
Pete Haughey has been a leading member of the community in the south Armagh village for years but has been left reeling after an unprovoked attack on his car late on Thursday night.
The incident has now left Mr Haughey without a car at a time when he needs it most.
“This disgusting behaviour has a ripple effect right across the community in this time of uncertainty and crisis,” he said.
“Not only am I left without my car for my personal use, I can’t do the prescription deliveries for Clarke’s Chemist, neither am I going to get the second 50 PPE goodie bags delivered tomorrow to our most vulnerable people in the community, neither can I deliver the wee flower pots to brighten people up and give them a wee lift.
“I actually feel sorry for the people who did this and indeed their supporters of which I believe are some.
“I specially thank the many good people who called to see me and private messages me this morning, including local residents, councillors, Irish mens’ shed association just to mention a few.
“Thanks a million for all your support, it is really needed and appreciated. Stay safe everyone.”
SDLP councillor Pete Byrne hit out at those responsible.
“Disgusting to see an attack like this on anyone in the community never mind someone who goes over and above to help others,” he said. “I hope they are caught and held responsible for their actions.”
Sinn Fein’s Darren McNally offered his support.
“I know people appreciate all the hard work you do for your community and I have been told by numerous people from nearby towns and villages about how you helped them or welcomed them into some of your initiatives.
“Keep doing what you’re doing and hopefully those responsible get caught.”
