Man accused of assaulting same woman seven times in space of a year

A Newtownhamilton man accused of assaulting a woman seven times in the space of a year will face Crown Court proceedings later this year.

The 31-year-old is also alleged to have falsely imprisoned the same woman on two occasions, along with having made threats to kill her.

Martin Callaghan, of Clady Road, appeared charged with three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, four counts of common assault, two counts of false imprisonment, criminal damage and threats to kill at Armagh Magistrates’ on Tuesday.

The assaults are alleged to have taken place on various dates between July 5, of last year, and June 3, of this year, with all the offences referring to a single female injured party.

Callaghan is also accused of unlawfully and injuriously imprisoning the same woman on both March 16 and April 12, of this year.

Stood in the dock, the defendant made no objection to the holding of a preliminary enquiry.

Prosecution stated that based on the papers before the court it was submitted that there was a prima facie case to answer.

Defence barrister Bobbie Rea made no contrary submissions to this.

Callaghan was released on his own bail to appear before Newry Crown Court on December 3 for arraignment.
