How we handle Covid-19 ‘a matter of life and death’ as five more people lose life to virus

Five more people have tragically lost their lives to Covid-19, the Department of Health has today reported.

It takes their official total to 494.

Four of those deaths happened in the last 24 hours, with the other having previously been unreported.

Of the total number of deaths to date, 52 are within the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area, while 32 are within neighbouring Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

There have been 18 more confirmed cases in Northern Ireland in the past 24 hours.

The Republic of Ireland’s figures, as of Tuesday, show a total to 1,561. The UK-wide total up until Tuesday was 35,341.

Meanwhile Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill says Covid-19 is the “largest task we have ever faced”.

speaking in the Assembly on Wednesday afternoon, she said: “How we handle Covid-19 is quite literally a matter of life and death.

“It has implications right across the executive. Everything we have done has been aimed at delivering best outcomes.”
