A report showing public support for a move to MOT testing every two years for younger cars has been welcomed by SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly.
The report, commissioned by SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon, received 1,224 responses, with a high volume of interest and support for the plan.
Minister Mallon has now instructed officials to begin engagement with the relevant groups ahead of a public consultation.
Mrs Kelly said she was delighted the proposal had been met with public support.
“A wide range of responses were received from both motorists and those in the relevant industries, with the overall feeling being that this move would be hugely beneficial,” she said.
“The report published today shows there is support for testing every two years for younger cars and as such the Minister Nichola Mallon has asked her officials to now work on the next steps for a public consultation.
“While any move will require new legislation in the new mandate, this step will be widely welcomed no doubt by drivers across the north.
“MOT testing is hugely important, it ensures that cars on our road are safe, protecting both the driver, other road users and pedestrians. This move will improve the experience of MOT testing for everyone involved and I hope to see it garner widespread support going forward.”
