The body of a missing person has been recovered from the Mourne Mountains.
Local search teams were called in the PSNI on Sunday.
The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team and Search and Ireland Dog Rescue Association (Ireland North) attended to help police in the operation.
Sadly, the hunt resulted in the recovery of a body in what has been described as “loy-lying but remote” area of the Mourne Mountains.
It is understood the deceased had last been seen around 10 days.
Both Mourne Mountain Rescue and Search and Ireland Dog Rescue were contacted to help police shortly after 6pm yesterday (Sunday).
Both attended, with the sad duty of reporting loss of life.
Mourne Mountain Rescue confirmed a team of 16 responded alongside Police and Dog Rescue and stood down shortly before 12.30am today (Monday).
Mourne Mountain Rescue, this afternoon (Monday), confirmed: “The team responded immediately, and in liaison with local Police, identified a priority search area.
“Alongside a dog and handler from the Search and Rescue Dog Association, the search commenced with a dog find following shortly afterwards. The team remained on scene assisting police and police specialists in the subsequent recovery.
“Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the deceased.”
Search and Rescue Dog Association said of its involvement: “We were tasked by the Police Service of Northern Ireland PolSa at 18:28, to assist in the search for a missing person who had last been seen 10 days ago.
“Given the circumstances, it was felt that a Human Remains Detection (HRD) Dog was best placed to be deployed.
“Within just five minutes of arriving on scene, one of our HRD dogs located the individual, sadly deceased.
“Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends of the deceased at this extremely difficult time.
“We would like to thank our colleagues from the Police Newry, Mourne & Down, and Mourne Mountain Rescue Team for their support.
“This is one of the hardest outcomes we face — which is why we train so diligently, to bring loved ones home.”
