A number of petrol bombs have been seized and police have come under fire from youths throwing stones and bottles during the ongoing security alert in Lurgan.
Lake Street was closed early this morning and the operation is continuing this evening.
Chief Inspector Paul Reid said: “I can confirm that there have been sporadic instances of a small number of youths throwing bottles and stones in the Lake Street and Levin Road areas. As police have managed this situation, a number of petrol bombs have also been recovered.
“However, as this security operation continues I would like to thank the vast majority of people in the local community who have supported us as we continue our job of keeping people safe.
“Their patience is appreciated and I ask for this continued support to carry on as we work to bring the security alert to a safe conclusion as soon as we possibly can.”
Earlier in the day, as the operation continued, Chief Inspector Reid, the Area Commander for Craigavon, said police understood how frustrating it can be when a road is closed, causing delays and general inconvenience, but it was never a decision taken lightly.
“Our first priority is always keeping people safe and this road closure is necessary to ensure the area is safe for the public to move through,” he said.
“Investigations of this nature can often take some time I am asking the public to be patient and assured that we are doing all we can to return Lake Street to normal as soon as is safely possible.”
