MINOR damage has been caused to a van after a pipe bomb exploded in a residential area at Bessbrook.
Reports of the device having been thrown at Ardaveen Park came in to police at around midnight last night (Friday).
There were no reports of any injuries but minor damage was caused to a van parked at a house.
Army bomb experts attended the scene and the PSNI are investigating a motive for the attack, although it is not thought to be terrorist-related.
Newry and Armagh Assemblyman Dominic Bradley said he did not know what those responsible were trying to achieve.
“I condemn those responsible for the detonation of this pipe bomb at Ardaveen, a quiet residential area, last night,” the SDLP MLA said today (Saturday).
“In doing this, they showed scant regard for life and, had the circumstances been different, someone could have been killed or seriously injured by this device.”
