Around 1,100 children and young people recently took part in a variety of summer activities as part of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s ‘Sport in the Community Programme’ with a celebration event held to highlight this success at Portadown People’s Park.
The Sport in the Community Programme is delivered across Neighbourhood Renewal areas in the Borough and is particularly aimed at engaging with young people in hard to reach areas who don’t usually participate in sport – and it was a fantastic success.
The age range was eight to 24 year olds and included MUGA games featuring a wide variety of different sports, Kickback for young men and Soccer Tournaments for all ages.
The celebration event saw around 200 of these participants from 21 different MUGA venues taking part in a street soccer tournament and multi-sports challenges in a bid to be crowned overall winner of the games – and competition was fierce but fun!
“The Sport in the Community Programme has been an overwhelming success this summer and the numbers of young people reached was superb,” commented the Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Paul Greenfield.
“The opportunities that this programme opened up was remarkable and it is clear that those who took part thoroughly enjoyed the activities and it will hopefully lead to continued participation in the sports they enjoyed the most.”
This project is funded by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council and the Department for Communities (formally Department for Social Development) and led by the Sports Development Department at the council. Refreshments on the day were provided by Tesco.
