A man who pressurised Portadown residents into buying rugs which he was selling door to door has been ordered to pay a fine of £1,250.
The 27-year-old’s barrister told court: “He wasn’t aware of the rules and laws in this jurisdiction and accepts the offences.”
Daniel Sheridan, of Roches Road in Rathkeale, Co Limerick, pleaded guilty to five counts of acting as a pedlar without a certificate and three counts of engaging in aggressive commercial practice at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Prosecution outlined that on July 29, police received reports of a male matching this defendant’s description attending two properties on Bridge Street, Portadown.
The defendant was attempting to sell rugs to the occupants but both refused.
At 4pm there was a further similar report. On this occasion the occupant purchased one rug for £230 after feeling pressurised to do so.
Sheridan attempted to get the injured party to purchase another rug, which he reduced from a price of £800 to £100, but this time they refused.
At 6.30pm, police located the defendant on the Dungannon Road and he was subsequently arrested before being conveyed to Lurgan Custody Suite.
There were a further two reports made in which the injured parties had been pressurised into buying rugs from Sheridan.
During interview, the defendant stated he was unaware that he required a certificate to trade and denied any aggressive commercial practice.
Defence barrister John McCann said: “He was in Portadown selling rugs door to door. He wasn’t aware of the rules and laws in this jurisdiction and accepts the offences.”
Sheridan was ordered to pay a fine of £1,250 for the offences before the court.
