Drink driver ‘late for a funeral’ was travelling with six passengers on M1 at 103mph

Police also seized 26,784 litres of alcohol with unpaid duty of approximately £50,000

A drink driver who says he was “late for a funeral” was travelling along the M1 in a seven seater – at 103mph!

The PSNI’s Road policing and safety team clocked the driver earlier this week.

And it came less than a fortnight after they caught a drink driver travelling at 112mph on the same stretch of M1.

“Unfortunately, this message has not got through to everyone,” they said, as the latest offender was three times the legal limit.

“Officers from Mahon Road Road Policing Unit detected a driver travelling on the M1 at a speed of 103mph.

“While telling us he was late for a funeral, we detected a smell of alcohol from the driver who went on to provide a reading of 93, the legal limit being 35.

“The driver was arrested and brought to custody where he provided an evidential sample of 106, being three times over the limit.

“Once the driver sobers up in his cell he will be charged to attend court. It’s just lucky that he and his six passengers were stopped before any serious damage could be done.”

The vehicle was a seven-seater.

Meanwhile, on Thursday evening, Mahon Road officers with officers from C section Armagh assisted Driver Vehicle Agency and HM Revenue & Customs with a heavy goods vehicle found to be moving contraband.

The vehicle was seized as was 26,784 litres of alcohol with unpaid duty of approximately £50,000.
