‘Fresh not frozen’: Portadown’s husband and wife team focus on natural aesthetics

'I chose the name Fresh Aesthetics as it best represents the look I try to achieve with my work. I want my work to look invisible, my approach is the work looks good if nobody can tell you have had anything done'

A husband and wife duo from Portadown aim to help patients take control of their ageing with ‘fresh not frozen’ approach.

After qualifying as a dentist in 1998, Dr Jayne Vaughan (51) spent 20 years practicing general dentistry before deciding she was ready for a new challenge.

January 2017, marked the beginning of a New Year and new career for Jayne as she started her extensive aesthetics training.

After building up years of experience in dental practices, clinics and salons, Jayne took a personal approach to her business in 2021 by building a beautiful boutique clinic at her home.

She now has over 1000 regular patients, and has carried out over 10 000 aesthetic procedures to date.

Speaking to Armagh I of her career change, Jayne says: “I became passionate about aesthetic medicine as I quickly discovered I had a natural affinity for it. At that stage of my career, I had been doing general dentistry for 20 years so I was ready to do something different and challenge myself.

“I loved it straight away and found I had an entrepreneurial spirit that I never knew existed as previously I had always worked for others. It was a very steep learning curve, figuring out how to grow a business while constantly upskilling in aesthetics.

“I invested a lot of time and money into additional training, far above the required standards. Injecting someone’s face is a responsibility that I take very seriously, as there are risks involved.

“I therefore continually invest in my education. I am proud to say I recently gained a distinction in my Postgraduate Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine from University of South Wales. Because of this, my patients know they’ll always be treated safely, with the most up-to-date products, techniques and procedures.”

With the business growing from strength to strength, Jayne’s husband Dr Brian Vaughan (50) – also a Dentist by profession – joined Fresh Aesthetics, enabling the introduction of new skin treatments so they could serve their patients more effectively.

Busy parents to Molly (19), Sam (17), and Rosie (15), working from home has allowed Jayne and Brian to be flexible with their hours around raising their kids.

Speaking of their business approach, Jayne says: “Our unique selling point is that we both are highly experienced and have been working with patients for a combined 60+ years.

“I chose the name Fresh Aesthetics as it best represents my ethos.

“The best work is invisible, so my patients just look fresh and well-rested, without anyone being able to put their finger on why. Nothing looks obvious or out of place, and they certainly won’t look like they’ve had anything ‘done’.”

Jayne describes herself as mature, professional and empathetic, understanding the changes that come with ageing.

“Our main demographic is woman from 30 – 55 years old, who have noticed the early signs of ageing and lost some of their confidence with it.

“I get great job satisfaction when I see how my patients regain their confidence after having their treatments. They look at themselves in the mirror with a smile on their face again.

“As you get older you lose facial volume and skin elasticity, so my goal is to just replace what you have lost, gently restoring what the ageing process has taken away. That’s the secret to staying natural looking.”

Before any treatments are carried out, patients undergo a thorough, no-obligation consultation to discuss their concerns. Dr Jayne and Dr Brian will offer various solutions, covering all the risks and benefits of the treatment options.

One size does not fit all, and this bespoke approach ensures you will get a treatment plan that is tailored to your face, goals and budget.

The patient is then free to go home and think before committing to any treatments.

“We do not believe in the ‘hard sell’. Our job is to give our patients all the information they need to make a fully informed decision, then the rest is up to them”.

The duo also explain the importance of skincare, following a tailored medical-grade skincare regimen to ensure you receive the maximum benefits from your treatment plan.

“The advice we give patients with more advanced signs of ageing is that it’s a process. Change won’t happen overnight, so we set realistic expectations and timelines for these patients.

“This especially applies to those preparing for a big event like a wedding. It’s a journey, not a quick fix, so they need to come for their consultation at least a year in advance of the big day.”

“This New Year we are placing an emphasis on skin health. We are excited to be introducing a skin analyser to the clinic in early 2025, which will give us an in-depth analysis of our patients skin surface and the deeper layers.

“The skin scanner will be able to show underlying skin issues such as pigmentation, bacteria, skin barrier health, broken capillaries, inflammation, lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores etc.

“The introduction of this device will allow us to accurately recommend effective medical grade skincare and skin treatments.

“I’m ageing myself and I understand what a lot of my clients concerns are as I am going through them too but my approach is to be realistic with everyone that walks through my clinic doors and be honest with what will really benefit them and not just having the quick sale mentality.”

Testimony to their excellent standards of work and patient care, Fresh Aesthetics was awarded Clinic of the Year Co. Armagh at The Northern Ireland Cosmetic Medicine Awards in The Culloden Estate and Spa.

Speaking of how happy she is to win the award, Jayne says:

“It’s always been my goal to be recognised as the best clinic in my local area so this award represents a dream come true!

“This validation proves that all the years of dedication and hard work have finally paid off.”
