A Portadown woman asked her friend to drive her to the shops after she was wrongly informed she could not drive as her licence was with the DVA, a court has heard.
Both have been handed six penalty points and a fine.
Mindaugas Jankauskas, 24, of Coharra Road, pleaded guilty to using a vehicle whilst uninsured at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Akvile Puidokaite, 21, also appeared charged with permitting him to drive without insurance.
Court heard on July 6, at around 9.45pm, police on patrol observed a Volkswagen Polo driven by Jankauskas on the Brownstown Road, Portadown, pull into a Eurospar filling station.
Checks showed that the vehicle was insured to a female.
When approached it was ascertained by officers that the insured named was the passenger in the car, identified as Puidokaite.
She told police that she had applied for a new Northern Ireland licence and did not believe she was allowed to drive.
Further checks showed that Puidokaite had sent her licence to the DVA, that she was insured to drive the car and that Jankauskas did have a valid licence.
Defence counsel stated Puidokaite had been misinformed by a friend that she could not drive whilst awaiting her new licence.
He added that she had then asked Jankauskas, who had a licence, to take her to the shops.
Both defendants were handed six penalty points and ordered to pay a fine of £200, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within eight weeks.
