A Portadown man who caused around £3,500 worth of damage to two vehicles has been sent to prison for four months.
Callum Evans, of Park Road, was sentenced on Wednesday for two counts of criminal damage.
Craigavon Magistrates’ Court heard the 21- year-old had caused a total the damage to an Audi A1 and a Ford Fiesta.
Upon hearing that the defendant had turned up to court without any money as compensation, District Judge Bernie Kelly said: “I take it you don’t have a car and don’t know the costs of running one.”
Defence barrister David McKeown told the court Evans had suffered from “a tragedy” earlier this year but did not wish to use this as an excuse.
He added that the defendant was on benefits and therefore had been able to find “this kind of money”.
District Judge Kelly explained: “I take a very simple view of this – you have shown no remorse, you could have done so by paying to return the injured parties to the position they were in before this incident,
“You could have gone immediately to an agency, found some employment and brought some of the money with you today.”
Mr McKeown said that previously he had informed the court that Evans was signed up for work.
District Judge Kelly added: “After reading the pre-sentence report I was reminded of my seven-year-old grandson. When asked why you did this, you said it was because they laughed at you.”
The defendant was sentenced to four months in prison.
