Man accused of burglary in Portadown and assault on police to face Crown Court

He was remanded in custody to appear back in court in the New Year

Craigavon-Courthouse

A man accused of burglary at two houses in Portadown and assault on police is to face the Crown Court.

John Hanrahan, whose address is given as Maghaberry Prison, appeared before Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday for the purposes of a preliminary enquiry (PE) – the legal process during which a case is referred to the higher court.

The 31-year-old is charged with two counts of burglary at a dwelling, two counts of assault on police and one count of resisting police.

The offences are alleged to have occurred on June 25 this year, with the burglaries alleged to have occurred at properties in the Bann Street area of Portadown.

Appearing before the court via video-link from Maghaberry, the defendant made no objection to the holding of a preliminary enquiry.

Prosecution submitted that based on the papers before the court there was a prima facie case to answer.

Defence made no contrary submissions.

District Judge Bernie Kelly, satisfied there was a prima facie case to answer, remanded the defendant in custody and adjourned the case to appear for pre-arraignment on January 12 and arraignment on January 26.
