There are no plans for road safety interventions on the Northway in Portadown despite a high number of collisions.
For years, the Northway has been dogged by collisions, from the minor to the fatal, but recently a spate of accidents has prompted calls for action.
Doug Beattie MLA made one such call on the Minister for Infrastructure, John O’Dowd – himself a Portadown man – on what plans he had to address the occurrences of road traffic collisions on that stretch of road.
“The majority of the collisions have occurred at the junctions along the A3 Northway, however there are no common causation factors identified that could be resolved through further safety engineering measures,” said Mr O’Dowd.
“The Department has therefore no plans to implement any further road safety interventions on the Northway at this time.
“However, the Department will continue to monitor the injury collision information provided by the PSNI to identify if further safety measures are required.
“I can confirm that the Department is planning to resurface a section of the Northway adjacent to Portadown Train Station and Mill Avenue, as well as refresh the road markings from West Street to the Seagoe Road junctions which will help with road safety on this busy A3 road.”
“One of the best ways to ensure the safety of our roads and fulfil our long term goal of eliminating death and serious injury on roads by 2050 is by changing driver behaviour.
“If all of us who are drivers do not change our attitudes towards speeding and careless driving, our death toll, which has increased in the past year, will continue to increase.”
