Nonagenarian hands over cheques for 40 times what he set out to raise

An unstoppable nonagenarian, who raised money for two causes close to his heart by walking across Portadown, has now handed over cheques to the value of £4,000!

Leslie Wells – who celebrated his 90th birthday in January – chose to complete a sponsored walk from St Mark’s in Portadown to Moneypenny’s towpath on May 17.

Known as the ‘Walk with Wells’, the effort captured the attention of his local community who turned out in force to support him on his way.

The entire distance – there and back – totalled approximately six miles and for those miles, Leslie aimed initially to raise just £100 in sponsorship.

The money raised was to be split equally between Leslie’s church St Mark’s – where he has been a life long member – and for Cancer Research, as Leslie had himself battled the disease alongside various other health issues.

Incredibly, Leslie raised 40 times more than he ever set out to achieve with the total balance on his fundraiser coming to a handsome £4,000.

On July 13, Leslie proudly handed over a cheque for £2,000 to each of his chosen charities.

Of his incredible effort, Rev William Orr of St Mark’s Church said: “It was a pleasure and a privilege to have accompanied Leslie on his walk in May and we are absolutely delighted at an amazing amount he raised.”
