Police and Royal Navy conducting major search of Co Armagh river

The search could take days to complete

Royal Navy explosive experts are currently conducting a major search of a county Armagh river in a bid to uncover munitions.

The PSNI and naval military are currently working in tandem to comb the area in the vicinity of the Corcrain River in Portadown.

It is understood the searches are in relation old Troubles related munitions, with a focus on the area to the rear of Hamill’s scrapyard.

“It is clear the PSNI have credible intelligence that some explosive ordnance may well have been dumped in the river or the surrounding area,” said Doug Beattie MC.

“Such is their concern they have now deployed Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Units to the area which is accessed via the Garvaghy Road.

“The search is a major operation and is likely to take a number of days.

“It shows the PSNI have absolute commitment to keeping all citizens of Upper Bann safe and I commend their courage and commitment and that of the military personnel taking part in this dangerous operation.”
