It has been a week of wins for Portadown College girls football squad who have successfully seen off competition in two Schools’ Cup finals!
On Monday, March 31, the U16 girls secured their first win of the week by lifting the Mid Ulster Schools’ Cup, retaining their title for the second year in a row.
The Portadown side took on the girls from St Ronan’s College, Lurgan, in the head-to-head final at Lurgan Town Arena.
It was a “keen contest played in good spirit,” said the school, but at the blow of the whistle, Portadown College officially secured the 4-1 win.
A spokesperson for the school said: “Two early strikes from Martha (Speers), followed by a well-taken third from Sasha (Thompson), put Portadown College in a commanding position at half-time (3-0).
“While a St Ronan’s goal reduced the deficit and gave the Lurgan side some hope in the final quarter of the game, Portadown College remained resolute, striking the woodwork on numerous occasions before scoring a deserved fourth midway through the second half and restoring the three-goal margin with a goal from Leah (Roney).
“A deserved victory and a great feeling to retain the trophy!
“Thanks to St Ronan’s for a keen contest played in good spirit, and of course to the Mid-Ulster Schools’ Football Association and Scott Gordon, in particular, for all his work ahead of finals day. Thanks also to those who came to support.”
And, on Wednesday (2nd April), the girls made it a double by successfully defending their 2024 title as champions in the Danske Bank UK U16 Girls’ Schools’ Cup.
Here, the team secured their second well-earned victory of the week with a 2-0 win over Parkhall Integrated College at the National Football Stadium, Windsor Park.
Of their achievements overall, the school added: “Massive congratulations, girls! You were magnificent and can be truly proud of what you have achieved!
“Thank you to Parkhall for a fantastic game of football, NISFA, Danske Bank, Nike, and of course, staff, students, families, and friends who gave us great support.
“A truly memorable day for Portadown College!”
