Portadown dancers ready to take on the world at competition in Portugal

Girls from Sonia Stewart Dancers

Members of two Portadown schools travelled to Braga in Portugal on Thursday to compete in the Dance World Cup.

The girls from Sonia Stewart Dancers and Portadown Dance College will compete in solos, duets and troupe dances across sections including ballet, tap, modern, lyrical and song and dance.

Sonia Stewart said she was delighted that 15 dancers, aged from six to 18, had been selected after being adjudicated on videos they had sent.

“Only the best four from each country are chosen for each category,” she said. “It is the first time we have gone and for a small, family-run dance school this is huge for us.

“There will have been so many entries and I am so proud of the kids.

“It will be a really hard competition but we will be trying our best and it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them.”

In a Facebook post, Portadown Dance College, which also has 15 girls taking part, said: “Being part of Team Northern Ireland and able to represent our wee county on the world wide stage is truly an honour and something these girls will be able to carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

On its website, Dance World Cup said more than 120,000 children around the world aged from four to 25 apply to qualify for their country each year.
