Portadown flute band ‘deeply disappointed’ after new memorial vandalised

Portadown True Blues Flute Band has condemned what it described as a “senseless act” of vandalism after its newly-erected memorial to past members was deliberately damaged.

In a statement, the band’s committee said it was “deeply disappointed” to learn that the tribute, which had only been put in place on Saturday past, had been targeted.

The memorial was created to honour former members who had given years of “time, commitment and service” to the band.

In the statement, the committee said: “This memorial was erected as a lasting tribute to past members who dedicated their time, commitment and service to our band. It stands as a mark of respect for those who are no longer with us and whose contribution should never be forgotten.

“To see such a memorial deliberately damaged is both disheartening and disrespectful, not only to the memory of those honoured but also to their families, friends and all who hold them in high regard.

“We strongly condemn this senseless act.”

Despite the damage caused, the committee said it remains determined to ensure the memorial is repaired and continues to stand as a permanent tribute.

“The committee remains committed to ensuring that the memorial is restored and continues to serve as a fitting tribute to our past members. We would like to thank those who have already expressed their support and concern following this incident.”
