Portadown man returns with annual ‘sleep out’ for homeless veterans – adding on another 24 hours!

Living on the streets - if only temporarily - forces him to confront the harsh reality of many of those left grappling with life after Service

A Portadown man preparing to commence his fourth annual ‘sleep-out’ for homeless veterans has announced he will be adding another 24 hours to this year’s effort!

Last year, Joe Robson – ex-1st Battalion Royal Irish Rangers, 8th Battalion Royal Irish and 3rd Battalion Royal Irish – braved the harsh weather conditions to complete his sit-out, living on the streets of Portadown for two days in September.

He did so to raise vital funds for Blesma – in support of limbless veterans – and Beyond the Battlefield, who provide support and counselling to ex-Service people living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and life after Service.

The first two years saw all donations to the benefit of the Great Tommy Sleepout – where participants give up one night, or more, of comfort to raise awareness and vital funds to help provide safe homes, mental health support, and a pathway back to independence for those who once served their country.

To date, his yearly challenge has raised more than £8,000 for those charities.

This year, Joe will fittingly make a space at the War Memorial in Portadown his home for three days and two nights – his longest ever attempt – from June 23 to 25.

His chosen charity this year is Help for Heroes, who provide tailored support for physical and mental health, welfare and social needs to both veterans and their families.

Alongside bringing in funds, Joe also hopes to raise awareness of the issues faced by many veterans in regards to accessing housing and medical assistance in Northern Ireland.

Living on the streets – if only temporarily – forces him to confront the harsh reality of many of those left grappling with life after Service.

He hopes to break the £10,000 mark and sincerely appreciates each and every donation.

You can make a contribution in person during Joe’s sleepout or via his GoFundMe page here.
